World School Milk Day Highlights Science-Based Flexibility in School Nutrition

Dairy Council of California celebrates milk’s vital role in student growth and learning as the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act expands options for schools

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Dairy Council of California marks World School Milk Day by celebrating the essential role of milk in helping students learn, grow and thrive. With the Whole Milk for Healthy Kids Act now in effect alongside USDA’s final rule expanding milk options in child nutrition programs, schools have greater flexibility to offer whole and reduced-fat milk in addition to low-fat and fat-free choices—meeting student preferences while aligning with current nutrition science.

Milk is more than the sum of its parts. The “dairy matrix”—the natural structure of milk—delivers a synergistic combination of protein, fats, vitamins, minerals and bioactive components that work together to support healthy growth, bone strength and overall well-being in children. This total-food effect is central to why milk remains a distinct food group in healthy eating patterns.

“World School Milk Day highlights the power of milk in the school day,” said Amy DeLisio, CEO of Dairy Council of California. “By restoring flexibility for schools to offer whole and reduced-fat options, we’re honoring the science and giving students choices they recognize and enjoy—supporting health and learning in practical, everyday ways.”

Research shows that students who participate in school meal programs consume more nutrient-dense foods, including dairy, than those who do not, improving overall diet quality during the school day. Milk is a required and vital part of these meals because it is widely accepted and helps children meet daily nutrition needs.
